Katharina Stieffenhofer

Katharina Stieffenhofer
Director – Producer – Writer

I am a Winnipeg-based award-winning documentary filmmaker with a commitment to environmental and social justice. I hold a BFA from the University of Manitoba. Over the course of a 16-year visual art practice, large-scale cast glass and steel sculptures gave way to land-based public artwork: the burial of a 43’ York Boat on the shores of Lake Winnipeg. My first documentary film, “The York Boat Project”, 22 min. (2003), documents the boat burial process and conveys the underlying themes of converging histories and universal interconnection.

My first feature documentary, “And This Is My Garden”, 58 min. (2010), celebrates the success of a school gardening project in a small, mainly Indigenous, community in Northern Manitoba. The subsequent documentary “FROM SEED TO SEED”, 87 min. (2018), reveals the joys and challenges of ecological agriculture and the impacts of the Climate Crises on farmers. “Everything We Need Is Here”, 87 min. (2026) is a love poem to the Earth, interwoven with themes of Nature, connection, resilience and resistance.

I am the mother of two adult sons, an avid gardener, seed saver, passionate forager and advocate. My deep connection to nature developed during my early years growing up on a small mixed farm on a Rhine Island in Germany. My parents modeled a strong work ethic, devotion to social justice, good stewardship of the land, and empathy toward all living beings.

Wendy Buelow is a Winnipeg & MB Interlake filmmaker and for many years had been involved in TV daily news as a videographer and editor.  She was pleased to work on Katharina’s previous film, “From Seed to Seed” as one of the camera operators, and in the postproduction stages.

It has been wonderful to contribute to “Everything We Need is Here” as the stories within are close to my heart.
